The 1985 Philadelphia bombing was a violent confrontation between the city and the MOVE organization, a Black liberation and back-to-nature group. On May 13, 1985, after a tense standoff, Philadelphia police dropped a bomb on MOVE’s rowhouse, igniting a massive fire. The blaze destroyed over 60 homes and killed 11 people, including five children. Authorities let the fire burn, leading to widespread outrage over the excessive use of force. The tragedy remains a stark example of government violence against Black activists and the destruction of Black communities.
