Description
The Church Rock disaster occurred on July 16, 1979, when a tailings pond at the United Nuclear Corporation’s uranium mill near Church Rock, New Mexico, failed, releasing a massive amount of radioactive waste into the surrounding environment. This event is considered the largest radioactive spill in U.S. history.
The spill occurred when the earthen dam containing the tailings pond collapsed, spilling over 1,000 tons of radioactive mill waste and 93 million gallons of acidic, radioactive water into the nearby Puerco River. The river is a critical water source for the Navajo Nation, which was heavily impacted by the contamination.
