Harlem Hellfighters
The Harlem Hellfighters were an all-Black infantry unit, the 369th Infantry Regiment, that fought heroically in World War I. Despite facing racism at home and in the military, they were assigned to fight under the French Army, where they gained a reputation for bravery and resilience. They spent 191 days in combat—more than any other American unit—and never lost a trench to the enemy. Many soldiers, including Henry Johnson, were highly decorated for their valor. Their service challenged racial stereotypes and paved the way for future civil rights movements, though they received little recognition in the U.S. at the time.
