The Carlisle Indian Industrial School, founded in 1879 in Pennsylvania by Richard Henry Pratt, was the first government-run boarding school for Native American children. Its mission was to forcibly assimilate Indigenous youth into white American culture under the motto “Kill the Indian, save the man.” Students were taken from their families, stripped of their languages, traditions, and identities, and subjected to harsh discipline. Many faced abuse, illness, and death. The school closed in 1918, but its legacy remains a painful symbol of cultural erasure and the broader system of Native American boarding schools in the U.S.
