The St. Augustine Wade-Ins of 1964 were civil rights protests against segregation in Florida’s beaches. Led by activists, including Dr. Robert Hayling and supporters of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Black demonstrators peacefully entered whites-only beaches to challenge racial barriers. On June 25, a wade-in at St. Augustine Beach turned violent when a white mob attacked the protesters while law enforcement stood by.
