Seneca Village 1853
Seneca Village was a thriving African American community in New York City from 1825 to 1857, located in what is now Central Park. It was home to Black landowners, as well as some Irish and German immigrants, and had churches, schools, and businesses. The village provided a rare opportunity for Black residents to own property, which in turn gave them the right to vote.
In 1857, the city used eminent domain to seize the land, forcibly removing residents to make way for Central Park, erasing the village from history for over a century. Today, Seneca Village is recognized as an important symbol of Black resilience and community-building in the face of systemic oppression.
