Wilmington 1898
The Wilmington Coup of 1898 was a violent, racially motivated overthrow of the elected government in Wilmington, North Carolina. On November 10, 1898, white supremacists, including members of the Democratic Party, business leaders, and former Confederate soldiers, led an armed insurrection to remove Black and white Republican officials from power. They burned the Black-owned newspaper, massacred Black residents, and forced city leaders to resign at gunpoint, effectively ending Black political and economic progress in the city.
This event is considered the only successful coup d’état in U.S. history and marked the beginning of Jim Crow segregation in North Carolina. The true history of the coup was suppressed for decades, but today, it is recognized as a pivotal moment in the nation’s racial history.
