The Chinese Massacre of 1871 was one of the worst racial attacks against Chinese immigrants in U.S. history. On October 24, 1871, a mob of about 500 white and Latino men stormed Los Angeles’ Chinatown, attacking, robbing, and lynching at least 18 Chinese residents. The violence was sparked by a conflict between rival Chinese factions, which escalated when a white man was caught in the crossfire. The mob indiscriminately targeted the Chinese community, brutally killing men and even a 14-year-old boy. Despite some arrests, only a few perpetrators were convicted—and their sentences were overturned.
