Columbia 1946
The Columbia Race Riot of 1946 occurred in Columbia, Tennessee, after a violent confrontation between Black war veteran James Stephenson and a white store clerk. When Stephenson defended his mother during a dispute, white residents demanded his arrest. Tensions escalated, leading to a standoff between armed Black residents and local police. White mobs and authorities retaliated by ransacking Black businesses and arresting over 100 Black residents. Two were killed in custody. The NAACP, led by Thurgood Marshall, defended the accused, securing several acquittals. The event exposed racial injustice in the South and was one of the first major civil rights legal battles after WWII.
