Eugene Bullard (1895–1961), known as the “Black Swallow of Death,” was the first African American fighter pilot and a hero of both World Wars. Born in Georgia, he fled racial discrimination in the U.S. and settled in France, where he joined the French Foreign Legion during World War I. After being wounded, he became a pilot in the Lafayette Flying Corps, earning fame for his bravery in combat. During World War II, Bullard aided the French Resistance before eventually returning to the U.S., where he lived in relative obscurity. Posthumously honored for his service, he remains a symbol of resilience, courage, and the fight for equality.
