Description

The 1868 Camilla Race Riot occurred in Camilla, Georgia, on September 19, 1868, when a violent confrontation broke out between white supremacists and Black voters during a political rally. The context of the riot lies in the post-Civil War Reconstruction era, a time of political, social, and racial upheaval in the Southern United States.

In the lead-up to the incident, newly freed Black citizens were asserting their right to vote and engage in politics. Georgia’s Reconstruction government had allowed Black men to vote and hold office, which caused anxiety among white supremacists who feared losing political control. On the day of the rally, a group of African Americans gathered to hear political speeches and organize for the upcoming election. However, a group of armed white Democrats—who opposed Black political involvement—attacked the rally, killing several Black citizens and injuring many more.

Though the exact number of casualties remains unclear, reports suggest that at least a dozen Black people were killed, and dozens were wounded.
